William James Te Wehi Taitoko, also known as Billy T.James, was a New Zealand entertainer, comedian, musician and actor. He played a really big part in developing and improving NZ comedy. Even today he remains a and icon. Billy T.James joined the New Zealand showband Maori Volcanics. The Showband has only made one Album with two disks, each having 12 songs. The showband lasted 35 years, (1967 to 2002).
ReplyDeleteIn 1981 not only did he start his own comedy sketch show, but was also awarded the New Zealand Entertainer of the year award. In 1990 Billy was awarded the Benny Award from the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand Inc for a lifetime of excellence in the performing arts. But sadly a year later he passed away at 43 due to heart failure.
Billy T was so funny because he took all the bad qualities of maori’s and pretty much joked about it. He was pretty much racist. But he got away with it, cause he was maori.
William James Te Wehi Taitoko was and always will be one of the best comedians of this world, at least in my eyes.
ReplyDelete1. the impact he had on NZ
It wasn't just New Zealand but I think because he came from there and setup his shows there the impact of everything he did was huge for NZ, so when he died the whole of the country mourned. His carrier started of when he made an appearance on Maori Volcanic Show band which travelled the world and performed. When it finished and he went to the next door neighbours his home country saw his skits and comedy they demanded him to come back home.
2. why he so funny!
Everything he did was comedy to anyone, he involved everything with his carrier. Skits, impressions and his cabaret singing I could go on but these were his main. When ever he did something he always used different types of cultures and talking about different things. I think this is why the whole world loved him and people from far away places travelled to see him in action.
My thoughts about him.
He's by far one of my favourite comedians I use to watch his show when it replayed on T.V. No matter how I felt he'd always cheer me up he was a truly one of the best at what he did. I agree with Aaron he couldn't go one show without being a tiny bit racist but he got away with it. Why you ask. Because he's maori how else.

ReplyDeleteWhat impact did he have on NZ?
ReplyDeleteHe entertained a lot of people with his performances. He inspired some young people to be performers as well. He helped stop the stereotype about Maori/racism with his skits. He showed people how to laugh at themselves like not many people back then did.
He was funny because he dressed up like different characters and made jokes that most people can relate to. And he was a likable person in general.

William James Te Wehi Taitoko, better known as Billy T James, was an actor, writer, musician and comedian. He was a big New Zealand icon and the whole of New Zealand mourned when he died of heart failure in 1991 at the age of 43. ( He called himself Billy T James because it was ‘something aussies could pronounce’ :D)
ReplyDeleteThe impact he had on New Zealand:
The impact he had on New Zealand was huge! Maori were way more appreciated by the public and he taught people how to laugh at themselves and their differences, which no-one had really done before them, or hadn’t done it much anyway. He could turn just about any given material into comedy and was a very happy and intelligent person.
Why he’s so funny:
He takes people’s differences and turns them into jokes. This may sound racist, but Billy T James said ‘If they listen to what I do, people will realise that the character will always come out on top.’ This was a new type of comedy and I think that’s definitely one reason why people liked him and found him funny. Billy had also taken aspects of humour from other comedians around the world and turned it into his own material.
I think Billy T James was very funny, and lightens you up if you’re not feeling 100%

He was one of the most popular new zealanders around due to ability to make everybody laugh with his big smile and infectious chuckle. ReplyDelete2. Why he so funny? Billy T james had opened up a new kind of humor that had never been thought of before; Turning peoples differences into jokes. Of corse there were a few people who thought that was racist and didn't like him but mainly people were exited to see somthing different so they went and watched him and enjoyed it! Those people then went off and told their friends about it and so on and so on and next thing you know he's famous all over the country and some oversea places as well

Billy was mostly known for being funny and laughing about things that would normally be rude. But Billy knew how to laugh about cultures but he would say it in a funny way. He was also very popular on tv and radio and in 1981 He started his own comedy sketch show and then in 1990 he was awarded the benny award.

He was so funny because he was always making jokes about new zealand related things so the crowd watching his tv shows and listening to him on the radio could laugh with him more easily because they knew what he was talking about so they could relate more easily to what he was talking about.
1. What is the impact of Billy T James? One Word, MASSIVE!!! Here is why. He was one of the best New Zealand comedians around in the 80's and his facial expressions was one of his main keys to making the audience laugh. He made me nearly fall off my seat watching his videos on YouTube! He was a big hit on the radio, and even more, on the TV. He wasn't just a comedian though, he was also an actor, musician and writer.
ReplyDelete.2 Why is Billy so funny? Billy T James released a new sort of humour to the world in the 80's. It's where you turn other people's differences into jokes (Billy did it with facial expressions such as using a impossible-to-laugh-at-as-well chuckle). Some people thought these jokes were offensive and racist but everyone else thought his jokes were funny and humorous. Billy T James's jokes started spreading out over New Zealand. And then came a huge hit.
Billy T James was born in Cambridge, Waikato,1948. Then he sadly pass away in 1991 due to a heart failure.
What impact did Billy T James have on New Zealand?
ReplyDeleteHe made a huge impact he basically introduced a whole other style of comedy to New Zealand. He also writes really funny songs that I think the band Flight Of The Concords can definitely relate to. I think they might have even got some inspiration from him. He was also an actor, a writer and at the end of his life he opened up a haungi shop.
Why was he so funny?
Well he is funny in many ways here are just a couple. First of all his laugh is really different to his voice so he will just be talking with his normal deep voice and he cracks up laughing with this wobbly high pitched voice! Second of all the way he can't say some words so he just misses them and goes with a easier word to say or pronounce.
