At the moment I am writing your reports. I am writing each of you a reading, writing and maths comment. Each of these show what you can do (what we have covered this year so far) and a next step for you. I would like you to write your own reports comments on a doc in your writing folder. Each comment should be about 500 characters long. I will only show these in front of the class with your permission so be honest. An example of a sentence in the Maths comment maybe:
I can use a wide range of mental strategies to solve multiplication and division problems which include decimals.
It may help to remember all the WALT's you have done. Good luck!!

Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?

How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?

    1. Q) Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?
      A) At first, I thought it was rather stupid, but when I read the article, I saw that they had really good points. I always thought it was a bad idea because risks would be pretty high and, generally, as a kid, I wasn’t allowed to touch either of those.

      Q) How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
      A) I first used both a sharp knife and stove when I was 8. I was pretty excited because I’d never done it before. After using the stove for the first time, though, I was afraid because I burnt the oven mitt I was holding and my hand nearly burnt. With the knife, I had the normal “Oh no, I’m gonna cut my whole arm off!” worries, but I was still excited-ish.

      Q) Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
      A) There MUST be something similar, but I just can’t come up with one.

    2. Do I agree? I completely agree. Why? Because it's a little like the first time you try a sport you may get hurt, but later you can grow up to be an athlete, just like you can grow up to be a chef. The first time I ever used a sharp knife was when I was 9. My mum showed me the safe way of doing it. I have been using hot stoves since I was 7, I boiled eggs. Another example, could be your first time trying to do a back flip on a trampoline. You and your parents need to trust you, or it could end in disaster. The first time I used a sharp knife I wasn't to fussed, same with my mum, we pretty much got on with it the same as learning at school.

In my opinion i think that we should because if you start using a knife or a hot pan you learn how to use it and if that child wants to be a chief it's a good age to start at.

How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
I was about Ten when i first used a sharp knife.my mum said that a was crying because i was afraid but i still did it.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
I cook outside off the kitchen at scouts and school.I think any cooking class would be dangerous but they would do a fine job looking after you.

    5. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?
I think its a great idea to get kids learning at an early age because they will have time to practice. Also I find it really sad when adults dont know how to cook which makes them eat more take aways or more processed food which leads to obesity problems.

How old were you when first used a sharp knife or cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
I think I was about 4 or 5. I didn't really much of it at the time and I think that was because my mum and dad introduced it to me really slowly so they started with me just stirring and measuring out ingredients for baking and then I was allowed to chop up vegetables for dinner, after that I was taught to make rice paper rolls which is a type of Vietnamese spring roll which involved no cooking. Then finally I was allowed to use the stove.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
Defiantly sport. In hockey there are people running around with big fibre glass sticks and at the same time there is a small but powerful ball being whacked around the pitch at full speed and your parents just have trust that their kids won't get hurt.

    6. I also strongly agree. I think that kids should be learning these life skills at a young age and also have responsibilities and an understanding on how to be safe around sharp knives and hot stoves instead of not knowing what to do. This skill could also be a big benefit for some people.

I have no idea when i first used a knife but i do remember holding a big knife and feeling “what if i muck this up, what do I do”.

Also like Rida I can’t think of anything but there are definitely some out there.

    7. My opinion is that there a quite a lot of things that kids should learn at a young age but I'm currently in the middle about children cutting things.children should be learning new things so they can know many things so when they grow up they may have more experience when it comes to using your skills but I'm still unsure about stoves and cutting.
I think I was either 5 or 6 when I would cut some veges. I was thinking you know if you muck this up your going to be in deep trouble and possibly in pain.

    8. 1. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves?.
I agree that kids should be allowed to use knives and hot stoves because I think that it’s an important life skill to know how to use and how to be safe around sharp knives and hot stoves But I also think that parents should choose when they think that there child is mature enough and responsible enough so when they are learning or using a knife they aren’t just swinging it around and when they use a stove the don’t play around it.

      2. How old were you when you first used a sharp knife or a frying pan? Can you Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
I was about six or seven when I first used a sharp knife or a hot stove I felt calm about the idea of using a sharp knife I was confident.

      3. Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
It would relate to things like learning to do a trick on a bike or holding a pocket knife/craft knife.

      1. Q .1) Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?

I think kids should have the ability to use a knife or a stove because it will be an important skill to do. But I think that they have to learn the safety of knives, like learning how to light a match. Maybe if they aren't really listening and using the knife as a toy or a weapon, the parents shouldn't let them use knives until they think that he/she is mature enough. This kind of goes for using hot stoves and other dangerous things in the kitchen etc.

Q .2) How old were you when you first used a sharp knife or a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
The first time I used a knife was when I was roughly 6 to 7. That's about the same age I first used a frying pan. I can't quite remember how I felt about doing it but I probably got all excited. I probably enjoyed it too because I'm pretty good at slicing and dicing vegetables now.

Q .3) Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age? I'm thinking camping outside, but also going out on the streets of J-ville by yourself.

    9. 1.I don't agree because young kids mite hurt there selfs with the knives snd burn there self badly with the stove but it can also be good to learn some skills with people helping them.

2.I was about 6 and i got burnt with the stove but with the knife I was all good with it because I was only chopping marshmallows.

    10. Do I Agree? I do agree to let younger children use sharp knives and hot stoves. At first I thought it’s a little risky to let 2 year olds use sharp knives, but as I read the article I changed my mind because there was some really good points in there like having trust in your children and it will help them learn better cooking skills for the future instead of just been able to bake cookies.

How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
I think I was around 7 or 8 when I first used a knife. I love to cook and I used to do a lot of baking when I was younger but my parents didn’t really like me putting things in the oven by myself or using a sharp knife so i’m pretty sure when I first go to use a knife I was very excited. One of the first times I used a hot stove I actually burnt myself trying to make fudge and accidently touched the stove that wasn’t so exciting.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
I do a lot of different sports and activities outside of school but one of the most dangerous ones is probably tumbling because you do a lot of backflips front handsprings aerials and more you have to trust your coach/spotter and yourself to push yourself to do it.
Another one is biking because it can be very dangerous especially if you don’t have a helmet on.

    11. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?
I think it is a great idea. I think it is very important to teach kids at a very young age, these skills will stay with them for life. Knifes are used for lots of things and being confident when coming to sharp blades is very important. I know it is a hazard because of the risk of an injury, but as long as there is close parent or adult supervision then it is ok.

How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
I think I was eight when I first used a big knife and probably eight as well for the frying pan. But had spent years before that watching mum and dad using large knifes and hot stoves and helping with the rest of the cooking/baking.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?
      Craft knifes
I guess scissors can be quite dangerous
      Guillotine
      Axe
      Saw
      Hammer

    12. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/why not?
I fully agree. I've never really been against young children using dangerous things in the kitchen (with the right supervision of course). I think it's a good idea to teach them how to use things in the kitchen safely at a young age to prevent mishaps in the future when they need to do something related to it.

How old were you when you first used a sharp knife/frying pan. Can you remember your thoughts and feelings?
I don't really remember what age I was but I assume I was around 8 when I first used a sharp knife. I wasn't really scared about using it and I was fairly confident. My mum never had much of a problem with me using it since she learnt how to handle knives properly at a young age, but my dad didn't really like me using it.

Can you relate this to anything outside the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the correct supervision you could do at your age?
I think sports is a big one. There are many sports that have a high risk of injury, but done properly can be really good. Also using things like a guillotine or certain tools.

      (A) I thought that it is not a good idea to let the young kids use the sharp knives and hot stoves then i carried on reading, it and it had points that you can give the young kids confidences to use knives and hot stoves. I think it's good idea because if we let them use it they will have more confidences and in future they will easily try those things.

(Q)How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?
      (A) i was 9 when my mum let hold the knife and she told me how to use it i was really scared to use it when i cut the first slice of something it pretty scary.

(Q)Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?

From the age of 7 and above, yes. By that point they should learn to cook because they are capable of understanding how to and the dangers that possibly come with it, while still being at a relatively early age.

(Q)How old were you when first used a sharp knife or cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?

I can remember the first time I used a knife: I was 9 or 10. I was mostly excited that I could finally use a knife on my own, and would be able to make toast and sandwiches all by myself. And also I was happy that I wouldn’t have to keep asking my dad to make toast every morning for me. It really felt like I was growing up.

I agree that young kids should use sharp knives and hot stoves. Why? Because kids at an early age should be learning some safety/ responsibility around sharp knives and hot stoves. It’s an important life skill to know how to use knives and hot stoves provided adult is with them and guide them when they are using sharp knives and hot stoves.

(Q)Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?
From the age of 7 and above, yes. By that point they should learn to cook because they are capable of understanding the tasks and the dangers that possibly come with it, while still being at a relatively young age.

      WHY?
•It gives the child a sense of independence-making them feel like they’re growing up.
•It gives the child culinary skills-preparing food on their own matters later in life when going flatting or on camps.
•Cooking their own food at home can be cheaper and healthier-avoiding the costs and fat and carbs of fast food can really make difference.
•If nobody else is going to make what they want they can cook it themselves!
•Knowledge of culinary skills can develop into career opportunities-as a chef or in catering.
•It lets the child tear away from the digital world and develop an interest and hobby in the real world.
•It also gives them a chance to experience contributing to the household.

    17. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?

I definitely think young kids should be able to use sharp knives and stovetops because, like it said in the article kids need to be able to prepare quick, healthy and yummy meals and with takeaways you can only ever get two of those things. Also in so many other aspects of life parents and teachers are always pushing their kids to go out of their comfort zone and try new things. I think us kids need to tell adults to do the same. Another thing is this: WE WON’T DIE. I always think this before a lot of scary or dangerous things that I do. If the chances of myself or others dying are anywhere near 5-10% I probably won’t do it. Yes you could chop off the tip of your finger but there’s nothing all that bad about having a slightly shorter finger for the rest of your life. The main message here is that there are way more dangerous things that have higher risk of injury than using knives and stovetops.

How old were you when first used a sharp knife of cooked on a frying pan? Can you remember your thoughts and feelings when you got to give it a go?

I’ve been using sharp-ish knives since I was about 6 (same size as a butter knife but a much sharper blade) but I’ve only started using really big knives and stovetops at the age of 9-10. I can’t remember much about my thoughts at that time but I think I was fine with the whole thing, probably because I had been slowly building up the knife size since I was 6 and knew that the time would come.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?

A lot of sport. One guy's died from a cricket ball in the neck and hockey is just a pretty dangerous sport with general with big meaty hockey sticks and a really hard ball. Also pretty much everything involving water especially in the sea like surfing and skin diving. Abseiling and rock climbing can also be pretty dangerous.

    18. 1.i think it is good for young people to start taking more risks like using sharp knives because for kids who want to become awesome cooks when they grow up it's good to start at a young age because if you are about to go to university and your like “you know what,i'm going to be a cook now!” and you start trying to be a cook you would have no experience at being a professional cook. That is why it is good to do something you are passionate about and start at a young age.also i think some people are going over the top with safety sometimes.

2.i remember the first time i used a sharp knife i was cutting an apple for my breakfast i was a little scared but mum was watching over me and that gave me some confidence after i had cut it i felt really impressed on what i had done.

    19. Do you agree? Is it a good idea to let young kids use sharp knives and hot stoves? Why/Why not?

I agree, I think it is a good idea because you learn, and you have to start from somewhere.
I think that it doesn't matter what age you are, I think it is the trust in your parents and you, that you can do it. I also think that at sometime in everyone's life they have to learn how to use a knife. So why not let your children use a knife earlier in life so they have that skill for longer, and are able to help in the kitchen.

Can you relate this to anything outside of the kitchen? What are other activities that may seem dangerous but with the CORRECT supervision you could do at your age?

Using a knife and hot stoves is sort of like the gym, like at my gymnastics. We practice back handsprings and round-off back tucks, that really need to have the trust and support from yourself and your coach. You need to have that trust, or it could mean you might injure yourself.

    20. Q1: I agree that small kids should be able to use knives, Parents just need to let kids learn. If you don't learn then when will you and who will teach?

Q2: I learnt when I was 3, I can't remember what it was like but I guess it just felt normal.

Q3: Lighting a fire- at first it seemed dangerous but know its just normal.
Rock climbing- a chance you could fall.

      1. I think it's a good idea to let kids use sharp knives/ use a hot stove because they'll have to learn how to eventually and you may as well get them used to it. Yes it may be dangerous at times and that's when adult supervision comes in. You probably should supervise your child the first time they try, as they wont be used to doing it and may need some guidance.

    21. Yes i think children that have good hand-eye coordination should be able to use sharp knives and hot stoves provided there is an adult nearby just in case.
I was 10 or older when I first used a frying pan and I didn't want to do it, because I hate fire unless its in a fireplace. I have never handeled sharp knives for cooking.

      Anything really.

    24. Term 2, Week 3 Homework:

Which one is your favourite? Why? Which one do you wish you had never heard? Why?
My favourite is Maybe Tomorrow because it’s got this really nice tune that I like and the woman has a nice voice. My least favourite is Fast Times in Tahoe because it just really isn’t my style of music and I feel like the tempo of the music changes quite a bit, making it sound slightly strange.

What is the song about? What is the artist's story behind the song?
I think that the song is about letting go of painful memories and moving on. (In a moment of time/when the fruit becomes wine/and the thought becomes a memory) That line kind of talks about how the current feeling will become a distant memory. Also with (All of your sorrow/maybe tomorrow/ will fade away in the end), the same message is shown.

Watch the following Music Videos. Which one is your favourite?
My favorite one is Nesian Mystik-It’s On because i like how they rap/talk really fast and he has a nice clear voice and it’s cool :D.

Which one do you wish you had never heard? Why?
Goodshirt-Sophie because i find the song a little too slow and how didn’t she notice that she was getting robbed? But the song has to me like no similarities to what's happening

Choose one of the songs and research the lyrics, what is the song about?
I think it’s about having a party and standing as one and always having fun we will never let you. (didn’t really get this one)

What is the artist's story behind the song?
The story behind the story is that they are a polynesian culture group and they talk about their life when they are poor and it has been filmed in New Zealand,Australia and Japan also it’s about family.

    26. 1. My favourite song would be either Sophie - Goodshirt or Its On - Nesian Mystik. I liked Sophie - Goodshirt because i liked the lyrics and the beat that went with it, and i liked Its On - Nesian Mystik because i liked the beat and the rapping.
My least favourite would probably be Maybe Tomorrow - Goldenhorse because the style its in isn't really the kind that i enjoy.

      2. I think Sophie is about how he really likes her and he wants to express his feelings, but he can't so (like it said in the song) he just adores her from afar.

I think Goodshirt - Sophie would have to be my favourite. This song reminds me of when I was little as my Dad use to play this song all the time. I like to beat to the song. I also enjoy watching the video.
I think it is very clever that she was just sitting there and people were slowly stealing everything in her house in time lapse, without her knowing right until the end. I like it when at the end she turns around and realizes that all her stuff is gone. The she drops her cake.

Which one do you wish you had never heard? Why?
Well not so much that I wish I hadn’t heard it ever before but my least favourite would probably be Elemeno P - Fast Times in Tahoe. I didn’t really like the style of singing and I didn’t enjoy watching the video.

Choose one of the songs and research the lyrics, what is the song about? What is the artist's story behind the song?
I think Sophie is about him liking her but not knowing how to talk to her so giving up and watching her from afar.

My favourtie would be I've got by Fast crew because it is very upbeat and quick and the stlye of the music video was cool.I like near the end where the cars bonnets go up and down in beat with the song.

Wich one was you' least favourite and why?
My least favourite would of been fast times in tahoe because the singers were dreadfull and of note. Also at the end when the three men are perfroming in front of the women the have a gutair which the guy is struming along out of time with the music and it wasn't even an a eltirc gutair.

      The meaning of the lyrics.
I think the meaning of the lyrics are just a normally weekend for a teenager in new zealand.

    31. Wich was my favourite?Why?

My favourite song was the sophie song by good shirt because it had the best music video and it was the most catchy song out of them all. Also it was my favourite out of the other ones because it was more exiting than the others because they were all boring

Wich song do i wish i never heard? Why?

I wish that i didn't have to listen to any of them honestly because none of the songs were my taste in music. Also most of the song had terrible videos to go with the song and they mostly had a boring tune to them .

      The meaning of the lyrics

Its basically saying how much he likes her and want to be her boyfriend but he can't

    32. Which one was your favourite and why?
My favourite was fast crew because it was so fast and a rap sort of song and it was and the style of music was really cool I also thought that at the end was cool with car moving to the beat it was quite awesome.

Which do you wish that you’ve never heard?
I didn’t like renegade fighter by zed because of the music video and the choice of words of the song it was sort of spooky and just a bad song and i didn’t like the chorus because of the main line about burning your soul.

      What is the song about?
I couldn’t find anything about the lyrics but i think that it was just a bunch of teenage boys who came up with a song and filmed it and put it on youtube for everyone to watch.

What is the artist story behind the song?
They started of as a group of friends that just liked music and made up a few songs but then made then started to get more serious about the songs and they made some songs including I Got', released in May 2004.

    36. I didn't really like any of the songs because they were so old. But my favorite would have Sophie, Because I liked the beat and It reminded me of when my parents played the song heaps on a car trip. I also liked the video because I thought it was different the way it was a time lapse but also quite funny.

I think the song is about a guy who really likes Sophie and can't find a way to tell her so he rights a song.

I wish I never heard fast times in tahoe because you could kinda tell there was a lot of audio in it.I also thought the music video was very weird because there was a lot of parts to it

None of them are my favourites because i don't really like the old music that was created i like the new music that is being created so it's hard to chose a favorite cause there all the same type of songs to me.

Which one do you wish you had never heard? Why?
Most of them, because it's just not my style of music.I find it hard to chose any because i don't like them and they are all the same types of music. They all sound the same , I know that everyone has a song or types of songs that they don't like, and this style of music is the type i don't like.

Choose one of the songs and research the lyrics, what is the song about?

I chose the first song, goodshirt. I think it's about someone called Sophie because, in the lyrics it mentions Sophie a lot and it talks about how shes so fine and polite to.

    39. Which song do u like why

I quite like Sophie because it had a good video unlike the other ones witch where all bad it's also got a good tempo and it is good to sing along to. It's also the kind of music my mum would play in long car rides.

Which song do u wish you've never heard

Honestly I wish I never heard any of them there all really old music that I don't listen to but I probably wish I'd never heard is fast crew I've got just because of the bad rapping and the music video

      What are the lyrics about

Basically he writes a song about a girls he likes and sing it along way from her because he's to scared to express his love about her face to face

      ReplyDelete
    40. What song do I like and why?

My favorite song is probably goodshirt because one it had a good music video the song wa okay compared to all the others and one of the only few that weren't blocked so I didn't really like any but comparing them to others I thought this was the best song for me.

Which song do you wish you never heard?

I have never heard any of this music before and none of it is for me so I wish I never heard any of it before because I don't like old music.

      What are the lyrics about?

The song says that the there is a girl that he likes but doesn't do anything about it and leaves her alone, in the song he also describes her and says that he will always remember him.
